4.2 Middle School Observation

For the second half of my time while being down at the middle school so far while observing Mrs. Baxter's 5th grade Literacy class, When I first get into her class room her students are already gone to their special class that they have for the day for example, music or P.E. While the students are in their special class, this gives me and Mrs. Baxter time to talk about how the day is going to go and what the students have been learning. I usually ask her questions containing "is there anything I can help you do," "how are your students doing" "are they enjoying the lesson being taught" ect. By this time it's not too long till her students return from special class then we get started with the day.
Out of Mrs. Baxter's whole class, one of my favorites would be her actual classroom where she teaches her students. I like how smoothly her class is run and how it's such a respectful environment. Her students feel comfortable asking her for help when needed and they enjoy answering questions/participating in anything that is asked of them. I like how well her classroom is neat, organized, well put together, easy for her students to know where everything is placed when they need to get something, they know exactly where it's at.
A more specific detail in her classroom that I'm drawn to is her protium along with her white projector board that is at the front of the classroom right as you walk in by the door. I feel like it would have a better impact on her students if they can see the lesson a a bored at the front of the classroom and with the teacher being at the front as well, so none of the students don't have to turn their back on her. They can pay more attention to what's going on. It's also a better way for the students for feel more engaged in the lesson to what is being reached because the teacher can ask students to come up to the projector bored to do following examples and it's a chance for students to learn from mistakes if they mess up. That way the teacher can be right there to guide them while explaining to her students.

One of my favorite methods that I have picked up on while observing a middle school teacher is how she gets her students attention. For example, she says "Shhh 1,2,3, come to me."

Another method I was drawn to was how she's always ready to help her students whenever they need her. She's always available. For example, she always keeps in check with her students by walking around asking them if they need any help or if they got it on their own.

Overall what I have learned so far is that teaching 5th grade literacy is all about making sure you are doing the right thing by the students and how you appear to teach them. What they pick up on.

To conclude, Teaching is a great career if you enjoy being around and helping students learn different techniques in their lives and what they need to learn for the outside world to further a future career.
